Shark fin

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-005198

A roofing defect in which the side lap or end lap of a felt ply curls upward instead of lying flat on the ply beneath it, leaving the edge standing proud of the roof surface. The name comes from the resemblance of the raised edge to a shark's dorsal fin. It occurs at lap joints, which are the overlapping side and end edges of felts in a built-up or similar multi-ply membrane.
