Spiral

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-005531

A type of transition curve used in railway track design to gradually change the curvature from a tangent (straight) section to a circular curve, or between curves of different radii. This curve allows for a smooth and continuous increase or decrease in superelevation (cant) and lateral acceleration. The length of a spiral curve is calculated based on design speed, curvature, and the rate of change of superelevation.
