Steering column

The housing that connects the steering wheel to the steering mechanism of a vehicle. It contains the main steering shaft, which transmits the driver's input from the wheel to the steering gear, and also houses components like the turn signal stalk, ignition switch, and wiring for airbag systems. Modern steering columns are designed to collapse during a frontal collision to reduce injury to the driver.
