To tighten a rope by pulling a bight of it sideways away from its anchor point, creating a temporary mechanical advantage to remove slack. This action is repeated along the line to progressively increase tension before the rope is secured. The technique is a form of manual purchase system, distinct from using a winch or block and tackle for heavier loads.
