Touch-tone dialing

A method of signaling in telephony where pressing a button on a telephone keypad generates a unique dual-tone multi-frequency (DTMF) signal. Each digit corresponds to a specific combination of two audio frequencies, one high and one low. This system replaced pulse dialing and enabled faster, more reliable communication with telephone exchanges and interactive voice response systems.
