An insurance company that has been licensed by a state's insurance department to conduct business within that state. An admitted insurer is subject to the state's regulations, including rate and form filings, and participates in the state's guaranty fund, which protects policyholders in case of insurer insolvency. This status provides a higher level of consumer protection.
