Asbestos

A set of six naturally occurring silicate minerals composed of long, thin fibrous crystals, valued historically for their heat resistance, strength, and insulating properties. Its use in construction and manufacturing was widespread until the health risks associated with inhaling its fibers, such as asbestosis and mesothelioma, became widely known. The two main mineral groups are serpentine (which includes chrysotile, or white asbestos) and amphibole (which includes amosite and crocidolite).
