Small-scale laboratory experiments conducted to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of a process or technology before full-scale implementation. In environmental liability, these tests might assess the remediation of contaminated soil or water. They provide preliminary data to inform risk assessments and guide larger pilot or field studies.
