A health insurance plan offered by an independent, locally operated member company of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association. Blue Cross plans traditionally covered hospital services, while Blue Shield plans covered physicians' services and other medical expenses. Today, most member companies offer combined plans that cover a full range of healthcare services under a single brand.
