Book value

The value of an asset as recorded on a company's balance sheet, calculated as its original cost less any accumulated depreciation. In insurance, it represents the accounting value of property, which can differ significantly from its market value or replacement cost. Insurers may use book value for certain types of coverage or loss settlement, particularly for older or specialized assets.
