Book value

The value of an asset as recorded on a company's balance sheet, equal to its original cost less accumulated depreciation or amortization. For a whole company, book value is total assets minus total liabilities, which equals shareholders' equity, while tangible book value also removes intangible assets. It is a historical accounting measure that may differ significantly from market value.
