An organization owned and controlled by its members, who use its products or services, rather than by outside investors. In the insurance sector, this structure is found in mutual insurance companies and reciprocal insurance exchanges, where policyholders are also the owners. Unlike stock companies that distribute profits to shareholders, a cooperative returns surplus funds to its members as dividends or reduced future premiums.
