Mutualization

The process by which a stock insurance company, owned by shareholders, converts into a mutual insurance company, owned by its policyholders. This transformation involves buying out the existing shareholders and re-establishing the company's governance structure. The policyholders then gain voting rights and a share in the company's surplus.
