Defense-only coverage

An insurance policy provision or type of coverage that pays for legal defense costs incurred by the insured, but does not cover any judgments, settlements, or damages awarded against the insured. This type of coverage is common in certain professional liability or directors and officers (D&O) policies, where the cost of defending against claims can be substantial, even if the insured is ultimately found not liable.
