Defense within limits

A provision in a liability insurance policy where the costs of defending a claim, such as legal fees and investigation expenses, are included within the overall policy limit. These defense costs reduce the amount available to pay for judgments or settlements. This contrasts with policies where defense costs are paid in addition to the policy limits.
