Drilling mud

A mixture of water or oil, clays, and chemical additives pumped down the drill string of a well and back to the surface in a continuous circulation system. It is engineered to transport cuttings out of the hole, control subsurface pressures, and stabilize the exposed rock formations to prevent collapse. The term is used interchangeably with drilling fluid, though it often emphasizes the fluid's composition of suspended solids like bentonite clay.
