Exposure rating

A method of calculating insurance premiums based on statistical data and the characteristics of the insured's operations, rather than on the specific loss experience of the individual insured. This approach uses broad categories of risk and applies predetermined rates to an exposure base. It is often used for new businesses or those with insufficient loss history for experience rating.
