Loss adjustment expense (LAE)

The costs incurred by an insurer in the process of investigating, defending, and settling claims. These expenses include fees for adjusters, legal counsel, expert witnesses, and other administrative overhead directly related to claim resolution. Loss adjustment expenses are categorized as either allocated, directly attributable to a specific claim, or unallocated, general claim department costs.
