Allocated loss adjustment expense (ALAE)

Specific expenses incurred by an insurer in the process of investigating, defending, and settling a particular claim. These costs include legal fees, independent adjusters' fees, expert witness costs, and surveillance expenses. ALAE is distinct from unallocated loss adjustment expense, which covers general claims department overhead.
