Mutual benefit association

A non-profit organization that provides insurance or other financial services to its members, who are also its owners. Members contribute to a common fund from which benefits are paid out, often sharing a common bond such as employment, religion, or community. These associations are regulated by state insurance departments, similar to other insurers.
