Old line insurance company

A traditional legal reserve insurer, organized as a stock or mutual company, as distinct from a fraternal benefit society or an assessment association. The term is used mostly for life insurers and established agency-distributed carriers. Such a company must hold policy reserves under state law and charges fixed premiums rather than assessing members for losses.
