Net loss reserves

An insurer's total estimated liability for future claims, calculated after subtracting any anticipated recoveries from reinsurance. This figure represents the gross loss reserves (the total amount set aside for all reported and unreported claims) minus the portion of that liability ceded to reinsurers. The calculation of net loss reserves is a key component of an insurer's financial statements and solvency monitoring, as reflected in the statutory annual statement.
