Office of Motor Carrier Standards (OMCS)

A former agency within the U.S. Federal Highway Administration responsible for developing and enforcing safety regulations for commercial motor vehicles operating in interstate commerce. The Office of Motor Carrier Standards (OMCS) established rules for driver qualifications, hours of service, vehicle maintenance, and the transportation of hazardous materials. Its functions and responsibilities were transferred to the newly created Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) on January 1, 2000.
