Private carrier

Term · Insurance and risk management · MLC-T-INS-002670

A business that transports its own goods in vehicles it owns or operates, as opposed to hauling freight for others for pay. A private carrier is not a for-hire motor carrier, so it differs from the common carrier and contract carrier categories in regulation and in the cargo and liability coverage it needs. In workers' compensation, the same phrase also names a commercial insurer as opposed to a state fund.
