Prohibited transaction exemption (PTE)

A specific administrative exemption granted by the Department of Labor from certain transactions that would otherwise be forbidden under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA). These exemptions allow fiduciaries of employee benefit plans to engage in transactions with parties in interest that are typically prohibited, provided certain conditions are met. Each exemption is issued after a thorough review to protect the interests of plan participants and beneficiaries.
