Blackout period

A temporary interval during which participants in a retirement plan, such as a 401(k), are prohibited from making changes to their investment elections or accessing their accounts. This period typically occurs when a plan administrator or record-keeper changes, or when a plan undergoes a major modification. Federal regulations require advance notice to participants before a blackout period begins.
