Defined contribution plan

A retirement plan where contributions are made by the employee, the employer, or both, into individual accounts. The final retirement benefit depends on the total contributions and the investment performance of the account over time. The employee bears the investment risk in these plans, such as 401(k)s and 403(b)s.
