Defined contribution plan

A type of employer-sponsored retirement plan where the employer and/or employee contribute a specified amount to an individual account. The retirement benefit depends on the total contributions and the investment performance of the account. Employees typically bear the investment risk, and common examples include 401(k) and 403(b) plans.
