A retirement fund that provides a regular income to an employee after they cease working. These plans are a form of deferred compensation, with benefits accumulating during the employee's working years and structured as either defined benefit or defined contribution plans. The Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) of 1974 is the primary federal law governing private-sector pension plans in the United States.
