Pennoyer rule

The principle that a state court's jurisdiction over a defendant is limited to persons or property physically located within the state's territorial boundaries. Established in the Supreme Court case Pennoyer v. Neff (1878), this rule was foundational to personal jurisdiction but has been significantly modified by subsequent due process jurisprudence, particularly the 'minimum contacts' test.
