Territorial jurisdiction

The authority of a court or government body to hear cases and exercise power over persons and property within a defined geographical area. This jurisdiction is limited to the physical boundaries of the state, county, or district where the court is located. For example, a state court generally cannot compel a resident of another state to appear unless specific long-arm statutes apply.
