Jurisdiction

The authority of a court or other governmental body to hear and decide a particular type of case or to exercise power over certain persons or property. It defines the scope of a court's power, which can be limited by geography, subject matter, or the parties involved. Federal courts in the United States have jurisdiction over cases involving federal law or diversity of citizenship.
