Diversity of citizenship

A condition in which the parties to a civil action are citizens of different states, or one side is a citizen of a state and the other is a foreign citizen, which is a basis for federal court jurisdiction under 28 U.S.C. section 1332. Complete diversity is required, so no plaintiff may share state citizenship with any defendant. A corporation is a citizen of both its state of incorporation and the state of its principal place of business.
