Diversity jurisdiction

The authority of federal courts to hear civil cases when the parties are citizens of different states and the amount in controversy exceeds a statutory minimum. This jurisdictional basis prevents potential bias against out-of-state litigants in state courts. The current statutory minimum for diversity jurisdiction is $75,000.
