Jurisdiction

The authority of a court or other governmental body to hear and decide a case or to exercise power over a particular geographic area or type of legal matter. In insurance, it determines which laws apply to a policy or claim and which courts have the power to resolve disputes. Jurisdiction can be territorial, subject-matter, or personal.
