Personal jurisdiction
Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-003736
The power of a court to hear a case involving a particular defendant and to make decisions that are binding on that person or entity. It requires sufficient minimum contacts between the defendant and the forum state, such that the exercise of jurisdiction does not offend traditional notions of fair play and substantial justice. This authority is distinct from subject matter jurisdiction, which concerns the court's power over the type of case.
