Subject matter jurisdiction

The authority of a court to hear and decide a particular type of case or controversy. This jurisdiction is determined by the nature of the dispute, such as whether it involves federal law, state law, or specific legal areas like family law or bankruptcy. A court without subject matter jurisdiction cannot validly rule on a case, and any judgment it issues is void.
