General jurisdiction

The authority of a court to hear almost any type of case, without limitations on the subject matter or the amount in controversy. Courts of general jurisdiction can preside over civil and criminal matters, including contract disputes, tort claims, and felony cases. State trial courts in the United States typically possess general jurisdiction.
