Statutory subject matter

The types of inventions or discoveries that are eligible for patent protection as defined by statute. In the United States, this includes processes, machines, manufactures, and compositions of matter, as well as improvements to these categories. Abstract ideas, laws of nature, and natural phenomena are generally excluded.
