Terra nullius

A Latin phrase meaning "nobody's land," used in international law to describe territory that has never been subject to the sovereignty of any state, or over which any prior sovereign has relinquished its rights. Historically, this concept was invoked by European powers to justify the acquisition of lands inhabited by indigenous peoples. Modern international law largely rejects the application of this doctrine to inhabited territories.
