Sovereignty

The supreme authority of a state to govern itself or another state, free from external control. In international law, it encompasses the principles of state equality, territorial integrity, and political independence. Domestically, the concept relates to the ultimate source of political power, which in the United States is vested in 'the people' through the Constitution.
