Political-offense exception

Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-003789

A principle in international extradition law that allows a state to refuse to extradite an individual if the crime for which extradition is sought is considered a political offense. This exception aims to prevent states from being used to suppress political dissent in other countries. The definition of a political offense can vary, but it generally involves acts directed against the state or its government, rather than common crimes.
