Nonfederal grounds

Legal reasons or bases for a court decision that are derived from state law rather than federal law. When a state court decision rests on adequate and independent nonfederal grounds, the United States Supreme Court generally lacks jurisdiction to review that decision. This principle respects state sovereignty in areas not governed by federal law.
