Appeal

A formal request to a higher court to review the decision of a lower court or administrative body, seeking to have the decision reversed or modified. The appealing party, known as the appellant, must demonstrate that the lower court made a legal error. Appeals are generally limited to questions of law, not findings of fact.
A request challenging the decision of a court by a party that has lost on one or more issues and seeks a higher court (appellate court) review of the decision to determine if it was correct. To make such a request is “to appeal” or “to take an appeal.” See “appellant” and “appellee.”
