Writ of error

An archaic common law writ used to bring a case from a lower court to a higher court for review of alleged errors of law. This writ initiated an appellate proceeding, focusing solely on legal mistakes made by the trial court, as opposed to factual disputes. In modern legal systems, the function of a writ of error has been largely replaced by the appeal process.
