Writ of prohibition

A court order issued by a higher court to a lower court or tribunal, preventing it from taking an action that is outside its jurisdiction or beyond its legal authority. This writ serves to keep judicial and quasi-judicial bodies within their prescribed powers. It is a preventive measure to avoid an unlawful exercise of power.
