Alternative writ of mandate (mandamus)

A preliminary court order issued by a higher court to a lower court, government official, or public body, commanding them to perform a specific act or show cause why they should not be compelled to do so. This writ is not a final judgment but rather an initial step in a mandamus proceeding. If the respondent fails to show sufficient cause, a peremptory writ of mandate may be issued.
