Prerogative writ

An extraordinary legal order issued by a superior court to control the actions of lower courts, public officials, or private bodies. These writs, such as mandamus, prohibition, or certiorari, are discretionary and are typically granted only when no other adequate remedy is available. They derive from the historical powers of the English Crown.
