Harmless error rule

A legal principle applied by appellate courts that allows a conviction or judgment to stand despite the presence of an error during the trial, provided the error did not affect the substantial rights of the parties or the ultimate outcome. This rule prevents the reversal of judgments for minor, non-prejudicial mistakes. It is codified in Rule 52(a) of the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure.
