Plain error

A clear and obvious legal error committed by a trial court that affects a litigant's substantial rights, even if the error was not properly objected to at trial. Appellate courts may review plain errors to prevent a miscarriage of justice. This doctrine is applied sparingly and only in exceptional circumstances.
